Tinkertech grows up

Students playing outside

New this summer is Design Camp for ages 11-13. We’re excited to partner with the Marin Makerspace in Novato to offer this camp. We have scholarships for this camp – read on to find out more!

Design Camp – July 18-22 – is perfect for students who are natural tinkerers. Through mini-challenges, students are encouraged to express their ideas and creativity through building in 2D and 3D. We’ve created Design Camp with our TinkerTech Grades 3-5 class alumni in mind but all students who are curious to design, build, and make will love this camp!

Who is teaching it?

Design Camp is led by Ellie Buehler who is a graduate of MIT and ran a FabLab in New Orleans. She is a great teacher and mentor for students interested in pursuing a career in STEM. Read about the Design Camp we held in Spring Break. It was super fun!

What do students do at camp?

Students work in small groups and individually through the week on mini challenges to build design prototypes, many of which they can take home with them at the end of the week. Although students will use all the technology in the makerspace, this is not a coding camp. As well as building their prototypes, there is time for breaks and fun – see the giant bubble wand testing here!

What is the Marin Makerspace?

The Marin Makerspace in Novato is a creative classroom dedicated to learning maker skills. It is the only fablab or makerspace open to the public in Marin.

How much is it?

TinkerTech camps are $649 per week for full-day camps, 9:00-2:30 pm. This works out to around $23.50 per hour. All materials fees are included in the camp cost.

How does my student get a scholarship?

Design Camp is sponsored by Nuts Bolts & Thingamajigs, the foundation of the Fabricators and Manufacturers Association and Sponsorship. Their sponsorship means we can offer some scholarship places for the Design Camp only. These scholarships are offered for students who can demonstrate real interest in making.

We have full scholarships and 50% tuition scholarship places.

We are offering scholarship places on a first come basis. All students will have an informal interview. Students can apply for a 50% and/or 100% tuition scholarship. Scholarship students are expected to pay their own materials fee of $100 for the one-week camp. Materials fees are due on the first day of camp.

Scholarship informal interviews by Zoom will take place through June and July until all places are filled. To set up an informal interview for your student to receive a scholarship email claire@tinkertech.me
